CLEAR Workshop seriesCLEAR offers a number of inspirational and practical staff development workshops and information sessions which can be customized to meet Faculty requirements. Areas of focus include intercultural competence, communication, facilitation, and teaching skills. The CLEAR project information session and focus group forum (Two fifty-minute sessions) Session One presents an overview of the CLEAR project and its current activities. Participants learn about the types of language and communication issues emerging for colleagues in the higher education sector. Session Two, an optional focus group forum, provides opportunities to express views, share experience and inform the CLEAR project. Building intercultural communicative competence (ICC) for better teaching Workshop (two hours) The aim of this workshop is to assist staff to draw on new knowledge about intercultural communicative competence and to raise awareness of its potential as a communication tool for teaching. Participants will be challenged to reflect on their current practice, share ideas and expertise and consider new strategies and approaches. Models and mentors – Learning from experience Workshop (two hours) This workshop draws upon the expertise of Monash lecturers who are regarded by students as exceptional teachers. Recorded excerpts of interviews, lectures and student feedback provide rich material for discussion and reflection on different approaches to engaging learners. Participants will also consider the role of peer observation and mentoring in teacher development. Facilitating student interaction and participation Workshop (two hours) One of the challenges of working with highly diverse student groups is facilitating interaction and participation. This workshop will present practical techniques and strategies for leading small group learning activities such as tutorial discussion and problem-based learning tasks. Participants will share and build on their current knowledge and consider new approaches. |
