Interactive video conferencing“Identifying Barriers and Facilitators to Interactive Video Conferencing in Medical and Health Sciences Education” A Project Officer, funded by a Faculty Teaching and Learning Performance Fund Grant, was appointed in July 2007 to work with staff of the North West Rural Medical Education Unit (School of Rural Health, Bendigo), Centre for Medical Health Sciences Education and Monash University Department of Rural and Indigenous Health to develop, implement and evaluate an introductory professional education module and video-conferencing teaching resources for staff. The project is due for completion in December 2007. A review of the literature related to best practice in videoconferencing in teacher development is in preparation with key focus areas including interactivity and collaboration, theories of learning and pedagogical strategies for use in the videoconferencing environment. The literature review, Project Report and a link to the staff development module (module content; pre-reading, list of core competencies, staff guides and resource list) will be made available through a web link. Based on outcomes from this project it is envisaged that a more substantial action research project and socio-technical analysis of learning and teaching practices in the videoconferencing environment, involving academic staff from a number of urban/rural sites, could then be undertaken in 2008.
