Recording and broadcasting of lectures

Lectopia

Lectopia, also known as the iLecture system is being trialled by the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science (formerly the Victorian College of Pharmacy). It is an easy-to-use system that facilitates the recording of lectures for delivery to students through the Internet. These recordings will be available on-demand soon after the lecture via streaming, download and Podcast and are intended for students who were either unable to attend the live lecture, or would like for to revisit the lecture for revision or for clarification purposes.

CALT Lecturer, Dr Harsh Suri, is working with the Faculty of Pharmacy on the evaluation of this project.

Monash University Lectures Online (MULO)

MULO is a heavily used automated lecture recording service provided by Monash University Library. It handles over 400 units and digitises more than 600 lectures per week from 100 lecture theatres across the university.

Lecture recordings are available for students to access on the internet immediately after the conclusion of lectures with a choice of either audio streaming, podcasting or direct MP3 downloads. Access is only possible using an Authcate password.

All lecturers need to do is switch on and wear a portable radio lapel microphone at the scheduled commencement time of each lecture. To have a unit recorded, lecturers or unit co-ordinators need to access an online request form at http://mulo-request.lib.monash.edu.au where they can enter scheduling details.

Monash University Lectures Online had its beginnings in 1999 and has been a continuing project involving significant expansion and ongoing enhancements to meet student and academic staff needs. Over time there has been a particular focus on streamlining system processes to ensure highest quality outcomes when handling larger volumes and large numbers of clients.

The One Minute Lecture

The One Minute Lecture is a project created and led by Dr Zofia Pawlaczek. The project focuses on the development of original digital media in the form of a video podcast (vodcast). Dr Pawlaczek combines audio and video to create original podcasts that underscore key teaching points associated with her lectures. The podcasts also communicate her students’ core readings. The writing of digital media is undertaken solely by Dr Pawlaczek who creates motion animations and illustrations that include characters such as Melissa the EMO who hates PE, Shane the outspoken student who deliberately asks silly questions and even an animation of herself – Dr. Zof – with crazy looking hair! She also films and edits her own videography, photography, music and voiceovers.

The One Minute Lectures form part of Dr Pawlaczek’s creative teaching and learning pursuits. She integrates these into her practices as way of communicating to Generation Y. The perception that Generation Y like to engage with short and quirky media (such as very short films on YouTube) have influenced her to undertake intensive digital media training so that she can develop generationally relevant pedagogy. As generation X & Y, more than any other preceding generations, have been exposed to a volume, frequency and type of media that has never been experienced before. This project is intended to tap into some of the common ideas relating to this phenomenon. The vodcasts are formatted so that they can be played on learning management systems, emailed to students, burned to DVD (i.e. for the following week’s lecture as a recap or dropped into a Powerpoint or Keynote presentation) as well as downloadable to mobile devices (including iPods and iPhones).

Tablet PCs and online delivery

The Faculty of Engineering is developing a simple system for cognitively-effective recording of lectures
using a tablet pc for online delivery in the department of mechanical engineering with some input from CALT through Dr Andrys Onsman.  The initial trials have seen considerable success and the system has
had somewhat an overwhelmingly positive response from students such that the Faculty is keen to develop this further.
