Learning and Teaching StrategiesLearning and Teaching can be seen as two sides of a coin, because the main purpose of teaching is to help students to learn. Some people find teaching to be easy, and even enjoyable! Others may have experienced difficult teaching situations and may wish they never have to face another class again. All teachers experience ‘good’ days and ‘bad’ days in their teaching, just as in the rest of life. It is true that some of us are outgoing (extroverts) and find it easy to communicate with others, while others (introverts) tend to work on our own. Even so, every one of us can learn to be better communicators and become more effective teachers. All of us can benefit from understanding how students learn, and by knowing how to help them to produce a particular type of learning outcome. Good (effective) teachers learn through their experience. They are able to encourage student learning by using specific teaching strategies. In this module, we will explore some of the strategies that have been found to be useful through a series of exercises and guidelines. The other parts will provide ideas that you can adopt or adapt for the kind of teaching you are expected to perform. Learning topics included in this module are:
