Working with StudentsTutors and demonstrators work with students in relatively small groups and generally get to know their students as individuals. You will quickly realise that students at Monash University have very diverse backgrounds. Monash staff members too have very diverse backgrounds, whether they work in metropolitan or rural campuses in Victoria, or on international campuses. Some aspects of diversity are often obvious (e.g., gender, language and cultural background, age and physical disability), but there are also less obvious aspects of diversity (i.e., socio-economic status and associated past/present learning situation, learning preferences, mental health, spiritual beliefs and the list goes on!). All types of diversity can influence staff teaching and student learning. With more than half of all students identified as members of an equity group and a third defined as ‘international’, Monash teachers need to develop approaches and attitudes which take into account all learners and try to engage everyone in their classes. This module includes the following three topics, with the broad aim of helping you to work effectively with all students:
