Using Technology to Support Teaching and Learning: Recording and Broadcasting Lectures

The Monash University Technology Supported Learning and Teaching Special Interest Group held a workshop on how to share the classroom learning experience most effectively with those not attending. The workshop was held under the auspices of the Educational Technology Committee, and with the collaboration of the CoolCampus group.

The aim of the workshop was to provide a forum for discussion of current practices and deliberation concerning possible directions for improvement and enhancement of services. Staff and students are invited to attend to help set direction for Monash with respect to the use of technologies that support teaching and learning.

The workshop explored the ways in which we currently support the classroom experience through recording and broadcasting lectures, such as Monash University Lectures Online (MULO) for audio recordings. More importantly, the ways in which such services can be enhanced and expanded will be explored.

Further, the workshop demonstrated some technologies available for recording lectures to allow students to remotely review the whole lecture or selected parts of it, by streaming voice and/or video synchronised with any slides used during the lecture.

The final part of the workshop discussed possible developments for Monash, and the outcomes will be forwarded to the Educational Technology Committee for action.
