Assessment and feedback strategies

Assessment and feedback are the items most frequently commented upon by students across the various surveys administered at Monash.

Assessment

With respect to assessment comments include: a lack of clarity in the assignment question or task, the link between unit objectives and assessment was unclear, assessment criteria was missing, assessment timeframe was unreasonable or clashed with other units and feedback on assignments was not provided or provided too late for learning to impact on subsequent work.

CALT is working with faculty staff to address many of these concerns. The types of support being provided range from offering assessment workshops to explore assessment methods and design for both print based and online assessment. Individual assistance in writing assessment tasks and setting assessment criteria is also available through CALT.

CALT also provides support for students and offers workshops and study groups for student unsure about how to approach assessment or prepare for an examination.

Feedback

CALT staff are also working with faculties to improve feedback to students. Often students only view feedback as the written comments on an assignment. However, CALT is encouraging staff to constantly remind student to be aware of various sources of feedback that are available to them throughout their studies. A section of feedback in the Unit Outline is encouraged to heighten students awareness.
