Staff appointed to Associate Professor positions at level D

For academic positions at the Associate Professor level, the Selection Committee* may, given adherence to specified selection processes, determine that the letter of offer should not require the completion of the university teaching qualification as a condition of probation.

Selection processes

  • Evidence of considerable, varied and relevant teaching experience and of high quality teaching must be included as explicit and significant selection criteria for the position.
  • Applicants must provide evidence of the nature, extent and quality of their relevant teaching experience.
  • A least one referee must be in a position to comment directly upon the nature, extent and quality of the applicant's teaching, particularly that relevant to higher education
  • Having determined that an applicant is the preferred candidate, the Selection Committee must separately consider the evidence on teaching and be satisfied that it provides clear evidence of the quality of the candidate's teaching.
  • If the Selection Committee is satisfied then it can approve a waiver of the requirement to complete the GCHE.
  • If the Selection Committee is not satisfied on the basis of the evidence available at the time of offer, the letter of offer will include the requirement to complete the GCHE during the probationary period. (The appointee may, however, later apply for equivalence of qualification or Recognition of Prior Learning under the same conditions as those applying to appointees to lecturer level A, B and C.)
  • If other candidates for the position are considered by the Selection Committee to be appointable and to be approached if the preferred candidate does not take up the position then the Selection Committee must separately consider the evidence on their teaching and make a similar determination as for the preferred candidate.
  • The Dean of the Faculty (as Chair of the Selection Committee) must prepare a brief report to the Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor advising him or her of the decision and its basis and indicating that the processes above have been carried out.

*Note that Selection Committees for positions at the Associate Professor level are chaired by the Dean of the Faculty and include at least two members of the University Associate Professor Promotions Committee and members external to the Faculty and the University.
